Industry trend toward higher performance electrical power systems, mainly in terms of reliability, efficiency, and power density, is reshaping traditional converter configuration. In this context, voltage boost capability, capacitor free dc-link, and short circuit protection, are all desirable characteristics which, if considered in the design stage, can make multilevel current source inverters a viable choice for many power conversion applications. Acknowledging that, this paper presents a novel asymmetric multilevel single-phase current source inverter. The inverter utilizes 10 switches to generate 9 distinct output current levels with low output voltage THD. The operation of the proposed topology have been verified through simulation and experimental results.
