Back in 2019, Google published the industry’s first open IP disclosure of the trans-inductor voltage regulator (TLVR) technology, which fundamentally unblocked the output di/dt limit from the VR perspective. Since then it has been quickly adopted by the high-performance computing industry (CPU servers, ML systems, network switches, etc.) for its superior transient performance over traditional VRs. Nevertheless, the concept of TLVR is yet to be extended with many new innovation opportunities in topologies, magnetics and control. In this presentation, we are sharing some latest outlook and calling for actions of the next TLVR innovations. Grouped TL and a new Zero-Bias TLVR topology will be presented for further optimizations of VRM power density and efficiency. Multi-MHz bandwidth control along with the power distribution network (PDN) topologies will be discussed holistically to reveal the next breakthrough of TLVR control.
