Power electronic converter in DC grids is susceptible to damage during short-circuit faults, and one of the solutions is to connect a DC circuit breaker in series with the output port. Currently available DC circuit breakers with this function typically use high-voltage grade, expensive, or special switching devices. In this paper, a novel solid-state DC circuit breaker scheme called BSBT-SSCB with excellent protective performance is proposed that uses only normal IGBT with slightly higher voltage grade than the system voltage as the main switching devices. The topology design was optimized and the cause of overvoltage was analyzed. Circuit parameters were designed through simulation and the protective effect was validated through experiments. The experimental results demonstrated advantages over mainstream solutions for DC short-circuit fault removal in a 1500V medium-voltage dc systems.
